New York–based designer Marc Bouwer is known for sophisticated tailoring, clean lines, and a refined sense of femininity.
His designs are worn on red carpets and in fashion media, most recently by Kerry Washington, Kelsea Ballerini, Sydney Sweeney, Issa Rae, Quinta Brunson, H.E.R., Janhvi Kapoor, and Haley Kalil.
Bouwer created some of pop culture’s most memorable fashion moments, including Whitney Houston’s wedding dress and beaded tour catsuits, along with Shania Twain’s iconic looks in the music videos “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman.” His 2004 Academy Awards gown for Angelina Jolie was later included on Vogue’s list of the greatest Oscar dresses of all time by André Leon Talley.
As archival fashion resurges, Bouwer’s earlier designs have returned to the red carpet. Kerry Washington wore a red velvet gown first worn by Whitney Houston in 1996, Kelsea Ballerini revived Shania Twain’s 1999 Grammy gown, and Sydney Sweeney recreated Jolie’s Oscar look exactly twenty years later.
A protégé of Halston, Bouwer established himself as one of America’s leading eveningwear designers, with collections carried by Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdale’s.
Today the house creates evening wear, select sportswear, and bespoke couture and costume design from its New York atelier.
